THE news that a popular pub and hotel has closed its doors has devastated News & Star readers.
The Fox Hall Inn at East Layton, Richmond, has called it a day after a closure message appeared on its website on Tuesday (September 6) – followed by another message on its social media channels.
The venue, which was based on the A66 between the County Durham and Cumbria border, was a popular destination for locals and diners who were travelling to or from the Lake District.
Owners Jack Bowles and Ellie Richmond said: “We are very sad that the doors have been closed for the last time at The Fox Hall Inn.
“We would like to say thank you to all our amazing customers, suppliers and our fabulous team who helped keep the business going until the last hour."
Readers rushed to share their memories of the pub they say will be a "miss."
Catherine Smith said: "Aw, used to call in there on way to York."
Nichola Turnbull Fawkes added: "Carlisle fans that do away games will all know this place! Cracking grub, what a shame..."
Jimmy Little sadly said: "Signs of things to come I'm afraid...", with Michael Tomkinson adding: "Won’t be the first and certainly won’t be the last.
"Dining out will be the preserve of the very rich the way things are going."
