This week sees the return of thousands of students to the University of Cumbria as they host their welcome week activities.

The traditional student lifestyle involves going out and partying, so Cumbria Police have issued some advice to help keep people safe.

Police advice includes taking a fully charged mobile phone out, planning how you are getting home, not returning to a drink you have left unattended, having a meeting point with friends if you get separated and always drinking responsibly.

“Cumbria remains one of the safest places in the country to live and visit, that is in part down to the support and information provided to us by our communities” Sergeant Andrew Leather said.

“Unfortunately, crime does still happen here. If you have any concerns about crime, or have been a victim of an offence, please report it to us, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem to you. Your report will be taken by an officer and any offences investigated.”

Last year a sharp rise in the number of reported spiking incidents was seen across the country.

Spiking is where alcohol or drugs are put into someone’s body without their knowledge or consent.

This can include buying someone a double when they asked for a single, without their consent, or adding alcohol to a drink they already have without their knowledge.

“Many people may not realise that this actually constitutes a criminal offence, whereas I think it is widely accepted that administering a person drugs, illegal or otherwise, without their knowledge is depraved, sinister and illegal” Violence Against Women and Girls lead, Detective Inspector Matthew Belshaw, said.

“If you believe you or a friends has been spiked, seek support from venue staff or a friend and seek medical attention if it is required.”

“Please also notify police as soon as you can. As soon as the incident occurs if possible. Drugs can leave your system very quickly, the sooner evidence is gathered, the more chance officers have in identifying and bringing offenders to justice.”
