Set against the mighty backdrop of high peaks like Great Gable and Scafell Pike, visitors to the Borrowdale Valley can explore Derwentwater and Keswick to the east or head over the mighty Honister Pass towards Buttermere and Loweswater to the west.
Other scenic highlights include the wooded stretch of the River Derwent near Grange.
From here, people can visit the 2000 tonne Bowder Stone or wind their way up a path through the trees to unexpectedly arrive at the sensational ‘Surprise View’ - it’s said you can even spot Scotland on a clear day.
The Borrowdale Valley is ideal for walkers of all abilities, including a range of high and low routes.
It’s also a playground for rock climbers, but even non-climbers can take a look at the seemingly unclimbable rock faces being overcome.
Shepherd's Crag is one of the most popular and best-known crags; it is also very accessible and is a good spot for a picnic too.
You can also discover your own very special piece of Borrowdale by staying overnight.
The new-look Royal Oak at Rosthwaite is one great option, having just undergone a £1.3million refurbishment.
Dating back to the 1750s, the former farm and miners’ tavern has always been a popular spot for visitors and walkers, but has just undergone an eight-month makeover.
During the refurbishment of the now 23-bedroom hotel and restaurant a variety of historic features have been uncovered, from original beams and fireplaces to a name etched into a window when the building was a Temperance Hall back in the 1920s.
New co-owner Matthew Welbourn says, “The previous owners did a fantastic job is building a loyal customer base over an impressive five decades and our aim is to stay true to the heritage of the property by offering a truly authentic local experience.
“Our service ethic focuses making people feel at home, very much like a ski chalet you might find on an alpine resort – a relaxed atmosphere, with a real focus on wellbeing, quality and comfort.
“Our drying room and new boot dryer is straight out of a ski resort and has already been getting rave reviews from guests."
