CARLISLE motorists have expressed frustation at ongoing Carlisle city centre roadworks.

The road works being carried out throughout the city, are causing significant delays for road users.

Particularly on Junction Street in Carlisle city centre, the delays are a result of lane closures as repairs are done

On that street, the road is being entirely resurfaced, a large job that will go on for a week non-stop.

Repair work started there on September 26 with a lane closure from the James Street junction of Nelson Bridge, following on through to Charlotte Street and onto Junction Street, when traffic goes back to normal on Shaddongate.

The lane closure will remain until October 7, so drivers may want to make plans to divert.

So, if heading to Dalston via Dalston Road and the B5299, it could save time by going the long way round via the A595, especially as there are also roadworks on the usual route to Dalston.

Near the Nestle factory there is a lengthy partial closure involving temporary lights that is causing delays of roughly a few minutes each way which also started on September 26.

This is to renew a worn-out footway, and will stay in place until October 14.

If heading towards Hardwicke Circus, drivers will encounter another lane closure on Castle Way, as the left lane of the road approaching the roundabout is closed, extending to its junction at the A7.

This is causing some congestion, however, traffic here is flowing relatively smoothly.

Motorists have expressed anger and frustation at the number of city centre roadworks planned at the same time.

One quipped: "Rumour has it that Chris Rea wrote 'Road to Hell' on Junction Street"

Another motorist commented: "After decades of traffic chaos disrupting commuters, school runs, appointments for doctors and hospitals, and an increase in accidents, blockages for emergency services...Carlisle still doesnt have any plans to build major roads or flyovers going in and out of the city at any point."
