Police have arrested a man on suspicion of assaulting former Carlisle United striker Hallam Hope.
It follows an alleged incident after Oldham Athletic's game against Chesterfield earlier this month.
The 28-year-old, who plays for Oldham, suffered "serious injuries" following the alleged attack outside their Boundary Park stadium on September 4.
There are national newspaper reports that a Chesterfield player has been arrested. Earlier this month the Spireites said they were "aware" of an allegation about an unnamed player and were helping police with their enquiries.
A Great Manchester Police statement today read: “A man was arrested on September 9, on suspicion of assault following a report of the assault of a man in his 20s, at Boundary Park, Oldham, on 4 September 2022.
"The suspect has since been released under investigation."
The incident is alleged to have taken place in the staff car park after Oldham's 2-0 defeat to Chesterfield in a National League game.
Oldham, in a statement after the alleged incident, said Hope had been ruled out of action for several weeks because of the injuries he sustained in what they called a "vicious attack". The club said they were providing police with CCTV footage.
Chesterfield's statement at the time, meanwhile, said: “We are aware of an allegation relating to an unnamed Chesterfield player. We are assisting Greater Manchester Police with their enquiries. As this is an ongoing investigation, no further comment will be made at this stage.”
Hope played for Carlisle in two spells from 2015-20, making 148 appearances and scoring 36 goals.
He has played for Oldham since 2021, with his other former clubs including Everton, Northampton Town, Bury, Sheffield Wednesday and Swindon Town.
