Three promising Carlisle boxers returned with gold medals from a major competition in Sweden.
Border City Amateur Boxing Club trio John Joe Carrigan and Mitchell and Mason Watson all won in the Gripen Cup.
They represented the north west of England in the event.
And there was a further accolade for 15-year-old Carrigan, who was named boxer of the tournament.
It proved a successful Scandinavian trip for the three young Cumbrians.
Mason Watson, 12, got the better of his Swedish opponent in Saturday’s final.
“He boxed really well and picked up a unanimous win,” said Border City ABC coach Ian Archibald.
Mason’s cousin Mitchell, 15, then stepped up to victory.
“Mitchell’s opponent pulled out on the Saturday so he had a straight final on the Sunday, and he boxed beautifully – a real textbook performance to win,” added Archibald.
“John Joe had two hard bouts. The first on the Saturday was against a really strong Swedish kid, and he put it on John Joe – I’ve never seen anybody put it on him like that.
“But he regrouped in the second, got back to his boxing and picked him off.
“It was a masterclass in the end as he found his range with some lovely shots with great footwork and ring craft.
“He also scored a unanimous win.”
It was the latest in a series of titles for national schoolboy and regional champion Carrigan.
“The club is over the moon with the three boxers’ performance,” added Archibald.
The north west region team claimed eight gold medals, four silver medals and two bronze medals overall, and were also named the top team of the tournament.
