Flood alerts as a result of heavy rainfall across Cumbria are expected.

The county is expecting some heavy rainfall across the county today and overnight (October 4).

The Environment Agency is warning communities across Cumbria to be prepared for possible flooding as heavy rains sweeps into the county.

A spokesperson from there said: "Rain will fall overnight from Tuesday and into Wednesday, with the Environment Agency preparing to issue flood warnings and alerts to communities throughout Cumbria.

"A flood warning means that flooding is expected, and a flood alert means that flooding is possible.

"We advise people to stay away from swollen rivers and avoid driving through flood water as just 30cm of flowing water is enough to move your car.

On top of this, a weather warning has been put in place as the north west - including Cumbria - is set to hit by heavy winds this week.

National forecaster the Met Office has issued a yellow warning for wind from October 5.

The strong winds will likely cause disruption. Met Office have warned there may be a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris, as well as damage to buildings and road closures.

Longer journey times or cancellations may occur as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected.

There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.

The forecasters also note there is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.
