The MP for Carlisle has said he does “not personally have a problem” with removing the cap on bankers’ bonuses.

The cap removal was announced by the Chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, in his controversial ‘mini budget’ delivered at the end of September.

John Stevenson made the comment when speaking to Kay Burley on Sky News as head of the Norther Research Group, an influential group of Conservative backbench MPs elected to serve in former Labour heartland constituencies.

In the interview Mr Stevenson said he thought the government’s economic policies were the right path for the people of Carlisle.

“I think the people that I represent want to see the economy grow, they want to see the investment into our area, and they want to see their own individual lives improve and that is what the agenda that the government is pursuing is all about” John Stevenson MP said.

“I want to see the Carlisle economy and the national economy grow. I want to see the standard of living in my area grow and I want to see the opportunities they have grow and that is about investment, and you are starting to see the that in places like Carlisle.”

“We’ve got investment going into our university, we’ve got investment going into our road infrastructure and those are the things that will improve the productivity of the local economy and therefore improve the lives of the people who live in my constituency.”
