A village’s horticultural organisation got widespread national attention this week with an appearance on the One Show.

Irthington in Bloom, headed by Danny Poland, a horticultural student, has reached the finals of the Britain in Bloom awards, run by the Royal Horticultural Society.

Following a two-year hiatus, the finals for the RHS Britain in Bloom, the UK's largest gardening competition, returns and will see 46 community gardening groups looking to wow the judges with their efforts to improve their local area this summer.

First time entrant Irthington in Bloom, in Carlisle, has its origins in the first lockdown when an enterprising horticulture student, Danny Poland, took over an abandoned school garden, growing fruit and vegetables for local people and sunflowers to help brighten moods and bring the community together.

Part of the Irthington in Bloom story was told to presenter Matt Allwright on BBC’S The One Show this week.

Danny and Matt spoke about Irthington’s ambitions, with Danny saying that the village has already won by reaching the finals and from what has already been accomplished along the way.

Matt showed particular intrigue on Danny’s so-called ‘hydration station’, a bicycle with a water tank and hose attachment for easy plant watering.

Irthington is in the village category of the Britain in Bloom awards.

They will receive their grade from the RHS later this month at a ceremony in London.
