PLANS have been lodged to convert two former barns in Rockcliffe into residential units.

Carlisle City Council has received an application for planning permission to convert the buildings at Halltown Farm, Rockcliffe into five residential units.

The application has been submitted by Castletown Estate and the buildings form a courtyard area adjacent to Halltown Farmhouse.

Plans would see the existing courtyard retained as it would provide more than enough car parking.

The conversion would see the two, single and two storey barns amended to create five dwellings. All of the existing door and window openings will be retained and where new openings need to be created, they will match the proportions and details of those already in place.

The existing materials will be “carefully maintained” along with the existing features of the barns to avoid impacting the character of the site.

Supporting statements submitted to Carlisle City Council said: “The proposals will be designed with crime prevention in mind, reflecting the attributes of safe, sustainable places for both the benefit of the property and its neighbouring properties.

“The existing features to the barns are to be carefully retained and integrated into the design. Existing feature trusses, purlins and roof structures are to be retained and generally are to be exposed to the accommodation.

“There are a number of existing feature beams that are supporting openings or existing floors. These beams are to be retained as part of the design.”

The agent has argued that the impact on the area would be minimal as the buildings being converted are not listed, access would be unchanged and the site lies outside the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
