THE CITY council is being consulted on plans to convert The Sally pub into a bed and breakfast.
Carlisle City Council has received a change of use application for the pub, formally known as The Salutation in Irthington.
Its current owners, who are also the applicant, purchased the pub in 2016 to reopen it and offer “a warm, friendly place with high quality products and services that would be welcoming to everyone.”
It had stood empty for a number of years before being reopened as The Sally.
The owners have invested in improvements at the pub including its guest bedroom accommodation on the first floor but now, it is proposed to change The Sally into a bed and breakfast operation with a small restaurant and bar for residents.

Minor works would be required internally for the change including a reconfiguring of the layout.
This would make way for a guest breakfast room, guest restaurant with licensed bar and ground floor bedroom with en-suite.
Supporting statements received by the city council report: “The main changes would therefore be made to the ground floor of the building which is currently used principally as the pub bar areas.
“The proposed restaurant/licensed bar and breakfast room as part of the B&B would not be too dissimilar in terms of the nature of the usage to the existing front dining area of the public house.

“The restaurant element would be utilised as and when required by residents. Clearly the applicants would continue with their existing bar license.”
Moving to a B&B service is seen by those involved in The Sally as the most viable option due to a number of variables including the economic picture nationally and the fallout of Covid-19.
