AN annual 'community art group' aimed at reducing isolation has returned with a new exhibition.

On October 22 and 23 between 11-4.30, The Irton Group Art Show will be returning to its usual site at Santon Bridge village hall.

The group was formed in 2009 by artists around the area to act as a self-help and encouragement circle - a focus point for individual practitioners, who otherwise tend to exist in relative isolation within largely scattered communities.

"Members will be showing new artworks, which always reflect the diversity of approach within the group," one of the artists, Gareth Harrison, explained.

"The result is always an exhibition that is both challenging and enjoyable to the viewer.

"Styles and subject matter range from the traditional to the abstract, calling at various points between.

"In fact, it is these wide boundaries that make Irton group exhibitions that little bit different.

"The artists like to experiment – each month the group meets for art workshops at the hall, in which members concentrate on a particular aspect of art.

"An agreed theme is usually mentored by one of the group, who provides guidance to start the day, followed by encouragement to develop and diversify.

"Anyone attending, we ask to you to come with an open mind"

On both days of the event, there is free parking and entry. There will also be refreshments available, in the form of tea, coffee and cakes.

Gareth adds: "The artists man the show themselves, and are happy to chat about the work and to anyone interested in joining the group.

"As well as the original artworks, there will be plenty of artists' prints and cards available to purchase.

"The hall is situated near the Bridge Inn at Santon Bridge, on the road from Eskdale to Wasdale, and it will be well signposted.

"Anyone wishing to join should not that there is no membership fee but a fee is charged for workshops attended to cover artists' rental and costs of materials provided.

"Any potential new members can also contact the group by emailing Madeleine Warren on info@art2choose.co.uk."
