AN 8-year-old was left 'heartbroken' as she went to school one morning and realised her bike had been stolen.

Rosa Robinson, who lives in Eden Gate in Houghton, was devastated to see the bike that she got for Christmas and used everyday with her friends had disappeared from her garden.

"I'd just finished a 24 hour shift and the bike was there, but in the morning, when I took my daughter to school, we realised it was gone," Rosa's mother, Katie Maddison said.

"She was heartbroken, she plays out on her bike everyday. She got it for Christmas off Santa, it was all she wanted. It was even the bigger size to last her through secondary school," she said.

A reward is being offered to anyone that can help find the beloved neon pink GX-24 Mountain Bike.

"She plays football every Saturday and when she plays well, I always give her a fiver but she's now saving that fiver each week to buy herself a new bike off her own back, she shouldn't have to do that though, that money is a treat," her mother said.

"It would mean the world to Rosa to have it returned, she would be absolutely over the moon - it would also mean the world to us. I've posted it everywhere online, I've gone so far to try and find this bike for her," she said.

"I've had so many messages about abandoned bikes, it's amazing how many there are, unfortunately none are Rosa's," she said.

Once Rosa's story had spread throughout the community, neighbours were quick to step up and help try get Rosa back on wheels by taking donations.

"People on my estate have started a collection for Rosa to get a new bike, which is really, really nice," she said.

A spokesperson from Cumbria Constabulary said: "Believed to have occurred sometime after 10pm, during the night.
