NEW pictures have been shared of the £27million redevelopment project which will soon be open to the public.
The redevelopment of Carlisle's Sands Centre will see the addition of new pools and a gym open from Monday, November 14.
The new Sands Centre building is set across two storeys and accessed by a bespoke internal street, the new build extension adds 40,000sqft to the existing building, with the redeveloped centre offering facilities including a 25m main pool and a 20m learner pool complete with a moveable floor.
There is a four-court sports hall with a spectator gallery, a fully equipped gym, and a spinning studio and dance studios.
The improved facilities also include a range of sustainable features which will support Carlisle City Council’s plans for reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, and providing sustainable, healthy transport options.
A News & Star reader was quick to share their excitement ahead of the grand opening.
Cath McManus said: "I've been looking forward to this for over thirty years. Having a gym, pool and all the other facilities in one place is going to be fab."
Leader of Carlisle City Council, Cllr John Mallinson, said: “I’d like to thank all those involved in driving the Sands Centre redevelopment forward during challenging times.
“It represents a cornerstone in our plans to support our communities by improving their health and wellbeing.
“This is a one-off opportunity with a dual benefit of all the facilities being on one site. I look forward to seeing its completion next month," he said.
