One of Carlisle’s newest cafes has seen success in its opening day.

Bob and Bert’s, a café chain of Irish origin, will add to its relatively sparse English roster with this branch by the Lanes in Carlisle.

Bob and Bert’s currently have 14 cafes in Ireland, six in Scotland, and now have five in England, meaning that this addition will build their presence in the country.

Bob and Bert’s prides itself on offering what it calls ‘proper coffee’ and ‘great grub’, in the form of all day breakfasts, lunches, light bites, sweet treats, shakes, smoothies, and more.

Their menu has food ranging from cakes to full-on burgers and hotdogs, with some adventurous creations such as a hot dog topped with chips and curry sauce, and one that is topped with baked beans.

Avant-garde cuisine aside, the Bob and Bert’s brand can stand out from the crowd occupied by Costa, Greggs and McDonald’s as an alternative choice for quick and cheap coffee and food.

Bob and Bert’s coffee prices are also worth noting, in that their largest cup of plain coffee costs just £2.50, so if buying coffee when out and about is a must, it may be cheaper here.

The menu is grand in size, making choices huge as well, pancakes, waffles, salads and loaded fries are on offer, as well as gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options to boot.

Bob & Bert’s was founded in 2013 in Portstewart, Northern Ireland, by Colin McClean and David Ferguson.

October 19 marked their soft, unofficial, opening, where some businesses in the area were invited to come in and say hello, while also enjoying some food and drinks.

Aine Condron, marketing manager at Bob and Bert’s, said of the opening on Wednesday: “We open at 10am on Friday (October 21) and the first 10 customers will get their entire order for free and then the next 50 customers will get a free coffee.”

On what Bob and Bert’s is offering compared to the plethora of other coffee shops in the city, Aine said: “We’re a bit different, we’re not like Starbucks or Costa, we definitely punch way above our weight.

“Our slogan is proper coffee and great grub, and that’s exactly what you get.”
