A WEST Cumbrian woman who was appearing before Carlisle Crown Court after admitting offences of indecent exposure and assault complemented the judge, saying: “He’s handsome, isn’t he?”
Former Whitehaven woman Ju Singh, 42, appearing via a video link for the hearing on her 42nd birthday, had earlier admitted a spate of offending, which included six counts of indecent exposure, two common assaults, an allegation of stalking and using threatening behaviour.
She also pleaded guilty to outraging pubic decency.
An earlier hearing was told that the defendant, formerly of Duke Street, had exposed herself in a children’s play park and danced naked at a window.
She committed the indecent exposure offences between June 1 and June 11, 2022, and August 1, 2021n and June 11, 2022.
In court, defence barrister Kim Whittlestone told Judge Simon Medland KC that suitable accommodation had been found for the defendant at an 'approved premises' in the south of England.
“It will enable the authorities to undertake an assessment of the psychological situation,” said Miss Whittlestone.
There was a clinical psychologist based at the facility and eight weeks would be required for the assessment of Singh to be completed, the barrister told Judge Medland.
Given the history of the case, Miss Whittlestone suggested that the judge defer passing sentence on Singh.
Judge Medland, who was not in court when the defendant complemented his appearance and who himself appeared via a video link from another court, agreed that deferring sentence on the defendant was a 'sensible idea'.
The judge told Singh: “This case is moving forwards towards a resolution but we have not reached that yet. I am going to defer sentence until December 9.”
In the meantime, the defendant would be released from custody on condition that she live and sleep each night at the approved premises in the Reading area, said the judge.
If she showed that she could comply with the court’s orders there was every reason that she would ultimately be sentenced to a community order or a suspended sentence, added the judge.
Singh thanked the court staff as the hearing concluded.
