Data has revealed how many complaints each council in Cumbria has received.

The data, provided by Claims, was taken from the Local Government Ombudsman, and also shows out of those complaints how many were upheld.

A complaint being upheld means the service the council provided did not reach the standard a reasonable person could expect.

If a complaint is not upheld, it means that the service the council provided was of a standard that a reasonable person could expect.

The data was taken from the year 2016 up to the latest available date in 2022.

The council in Cumbria with the lowest number of complaints is Carlisle City Council, with a total of 4.9 complaints per 10,000 people, with the most common complaint topic being planning and development.

The council with the highest number of complaints is Allerdale Borough Council, which received 12.5 complaints per 10,000 people, again, mostly about planning and development.

Eden District Council received 9.4 complaints per 10,000 people, while Barrow-in -Furness Borough Council and South Lakeland District Council received 8.2 and 7 complaints per 10,000 people respectively.

A spokesperson for Copeland Borough Council, said: “We’re pleased to hear that we have the second lowest number of complaints in the county, and that of those complaints received – only 20 per cent were upheld, meaning that they fell below our usual high service standards.

“We’re incredibly proud of the service we provide to Copeland residents and the quality of this is reflected in these statistics.

“We continually strive to reach the highest standards possible, with the resources we have available, and we thank all our dedicated employees for their hard work and commitment to the people of Copeland.”

A spokesperson from Carlisle City Council said: ““Every attempt is made to provide the best services we can to our residents and businesses.

“Any complaints are taken extremely seriously and we aim to remedy them as quickly as we can.

“Very few complaints progress to the Ombudsman and our figures are amongst the lowest in the country.”
