A DOCTORS' surgery had to close in Egremont today after reports of smoke coming from a light fitting.

Cumbria Fire Service were called to Beech House Surgery in the town just after 9am this morning, October 24 after reports of smoke coming from a light fitting in the surgery.

The surgery was closed for the day whilst firefighters isolated the electric supply and dealt with the issue.

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire Service said: “At 09:03 on Monday, October 24, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised to Beech House Surgery in Egremont to reports of smoke coming from a light fitting."

Earlier today, a spokesman for NHS North Cumbria said: “Firefighters isolated the electric supply to the surgery and removed the light fitting causing the smoke.

"The building was left in the care of the building controller of the surgery.”

A spokesman added: "There has been a fire incident at Beech House Surgery.

"No one has been hurt but the practice is currently closed whilst the fire brigade make it safe.

"They have implemented our business continuity plans.

"Patients can ring the Beech House number 01946 820203 and calls will be diverted to their other sites.

"Staff are contacting patients with appointments today to advise accordingly. The practice is expected to be open as normal again tomorrow."
