CUMBRIAN MPs have been reacting to Suella Braverman's description of the ongoing migrant crisis as an 'invasion'.

In a statement to the House of Commons yesterday, the home secretary said: "The British people deserve to know which party is serious about stopping the invasion on our southern coast and which party is not."

This came after the home secretary was put under pressure to deal with the overcrowding at Manston asylum processing centre in Kent.

In the aftermath of these comments on the crisis, Cumbrian MPs reacted to the language used by Ms Braverman.

John Stevenson, Conservative Party MP for Carlisle, backed the home secretary's commitment to solving the immigration crisis - whilst also acknowledging the magnitude of this task.

He said: "Suella Braverman as home secretary faces the extremely difficult task of resolving the issue of illegal immigration.

"Her comments in recent weeks have been resolute and show her commitment to trying to bring illegal immigration under control.

"The present levels of illegal immigration are unsustainable and, if we are not careful, will start to harm communities up and down the country.

"Our aim should be to reduce the levels of illegal immigration and help those who have a legitimate reason to remain in our country," he continued.

In a statement, Conservative Party MP for Workington, Mark Jenkinson also outlined his support for the home secretary.

He said: "Sunak's reappointment of Suella Braverman is to be welcomed. Braverman has, to my mind, what it takes to fix this crisis. But she needs to supported by Cabinet and the Prime Minister," he continued.

Mr Jekinson also posted the definition of the word 'invasion' to his Twitter page.

Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, Tim Farron, also took to Twitter to give his thoughts on the matter, in a tweet which slammed the home secretary's handling on the situation.

He said: "Suella Braverman is successfully diverting folks from the economic and financial disaster engulfing families, hospitals, schools etc.. which is almost always the purpose of culture war.

"Her words about refugees were appalling, dangerous and inaccurate, but clever and deliberate."
