AN arson investigation has been launched following a derelict building fire which “could have been catastrophic”.
Fire crews battled for nearly nine hours yesterday to put out the blaze on a building known locally as the Mansion at Hollins Close in Mirehouse, Whitehaven.
Firefighters were called out at around 5.45am, with crews from Whitehaven, Frizington and Carlisle East deployed to the burning building. The incident was brought to a close shortly before 2.30pm.
People were advised to keep their windows closed while crews fought to extinguish the flames.
Fire crews had been called out to the same building at 1.30am the day before (November 1) to tackle a blaze on the first floor, which had spread to the roof.
Cumbria County Council could not confirm if these were two separate incidents or the first fire had re-ignited.
Cumbria Police said the incident on November 1 was being investigated as arson.
Youths have been trespassing into the empty building in recent months and a warning was issued after police sent away 13 young people who were found inside.
Carl ‘Wammo’ Walmsley, who represents Whitehaven South on Copeland Council, said: “This has been coming - the kids have been getting in there for a long time now, ignoring all the warning signs and pleas from the emergency services, the councillors and the residents.
“This could have been catastrophic. If it is arson by these kids we could be quite easily writing about their deaths.
“It's my understanding there is only one way in and out of that building and if that had have been blocked by the fire spreading, they would not have lived to tell the tale because it is near impossible for the emergency rescue teams to get to them quickly.
“This building needs gone, and fast, because quite simply some kids refuse to be educated and don't value lives.”
