With two goals against Iran, Bukayo Saka was one of England’s undoubted stars in their World Cup opener against Iran.
The Arsenal star became the latest player to score at least two goals for England in a game during the tournament.
But who was the first?
The answer is a familiar name in Cumbria – the great Ivor Broadis.
The legendary former Carlisle United player, manager and journalist claimed a place in the national team’s history back in 1954.
Broadis was in Walter Winterbottom’s squad for the tournament in Switzerland that year.
He was picked for England’s opening game against Belgium.
And Broadis made his mark on the global stage with goals in the 26th and 63rd minutes in the game.
The feat by Broadis, who was then on Newcastle United’s books, came in a 4-4 draw in Basel, during one of his 14 appearances for the international side.
Since then, nine other different players have scored twice or more for the national side at a World Cup finals.
The second actually came in the same game as Broadis, as Bolton Wanderers legend Nat Lofthouse also netted twice, completing his double later in the match.
It then happened three times in the 1966 World Cup when England went on to lift the trophy for the only time in their history.
Roger Hunt grabbed a brace in the 2-0 group stage victory over France, before Bobby Charlton hit both goals in the 2-1 semi-final win over Portugal.
And then, most famously of all, Geoff Hurst’s hat-trick came in the final against West Germany.
Then it was 1982, when Bryan Robson was on target twice in England’s 3-1 victory in their opening game against France in the Spain tournament.
Onto Mexico 1986, and Gary Lineker’s memorable group-stage hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Poland.
Lineker then helped himself to two more in the second round victory over Paraguay by the same scoreline.
And Italia 1990 also saw Lineker add another brace, this time two penalties in the 3-2 quarter-final victory over Cameroon.
It was not until the 2018 World Cup in Russia that it happened again for England.
Their opening game, a 2-1 win over Tunisia, saw two goals from Harry Kane.
Their next game resulted in a 6-1 thrashing of Panama, which featured a Kane hat-trick and a brace from perhaps the least likely England double-scorer at a World Cup, defender John Stones.
Saka’s brace in the 6-2 win over Iran made him the tenth England player to achieve at least two in a game at the tournament, and the 13th occasion overall that it’s happened since the great Broadis – who died in 2019 aged 96 – started the trend some 68 years ago.
