A CARLISLE campaigner has re-issued calls for traffic calming measures, after a man died in the area over the weekend.

Brian Wernham has renewed his calls for a traffic safety plan for Stanwix and for the Stanwix Conservation Zone to be made into a 20mph limit.

Police attended a report of a collision in Well Lane in Carlisle on Friday, December 9.

The incident involved two cars, a Toyota and an Audi, and happened at around 4.10pm on Friday.

The driver of the Toyota, a man in his 60s, has subsequently died.

Councillor Brian Wernham has called on Cumbria County Council to introduce a traffic safety plan 'urgently' that will be passed on to the new Cumberland Authority come April 2023.

Brian said: “A second traffic death in the Stanwix conservation area this year today occurred in Well Lane.

"My thoughts are with the family and friends of the man in his 60s who died in the two car collision.

"I have today called upon the chair of the Cumbria County Council Local Committee to consider again my plea for a traffic safety plan.

Earlier this year I made a speech in person to the committee. In that speech I specifically detailed the traffic dangers in Well Lane, just around a hair-pin bend from the Stanwix Primary School."

Brian concluded: ”Such a traffic safety plan should be urgently initiated by the outgoing county councillors and quickly and seamlessly passed on to the Cumberland Unitary Authority to enact.”

A county council spokesperson, said: “It’s important that any collision is fully understood and investigated before considering a response.
“We await the findings of investigation into both incidents at this location, and will respond accordingly if we are made aware of any road safety issues that need to be addressed.
“We cannot prejudice the findings of these investigations, or comment officially on any findings until the police advise otherwise.”

Cumbria Police have begun an investigation and would like to appeal for anyone who witnessed what occurred but is yet to come forward to do so.

A number of our readers shared an online message of ‘Rest In Peace’ while another commented: ‘So sad.’

Anyone with information relating to this incident can report online at cumbria.police.uk/reportit, quoting incident number 135 of December 9 2022.

Mr Wernham said he has sent an email to the councillors concerned over the weekend.

Cumbria County Council has been approached for comment but did not respond at the time of publication.
