A WOMAN has spoken of her and her daughter’s desperate attempts to save a neighbour who tragically died in a house fire yesterday (December 13).

Dorothy McCreadie, who lives on Hadrian's Gardens in Carlisle, told of her and her daughter Shannon Marshall’s attempt of CPR on the woman.

As police officer and crime scene investigators were busy working on the scene just two doors down from her, she recalled the harrowing events of that morning.

“There wasn’t any sign of a fire until you got to the house, all you could smell was smoke," she said.

“My daughter and I went down and gave CPR.”

Dorothy said this was at around 8.20am, three minutes before police came to the scene.

She said that the woman who died was a mother, and had a son and daughter, the latter of whom was the one who made the tragic discovery that morning.

The woman was the only person in the house at the time, Ms McCreadie said.

She continued: “The air ambulance had been as well.

“The only things that would be in the house would be her pets, and I don’t know if they would have survived.”

Dorothy said that the street is a close-knit community where everybody knows everyone else.

A spokesperson from Cumbria Police said yesterday morning: “Police were contacted at 8.23am (on December 13), to the report of a fire at a property on Hadrian’s Gardens, Carlisle.

“Emergency services, police, Cumbria Fire and Rescue and North West Ambulance Service are in attendance.

“A woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“A joint investigation is ongoing between Cumbria Fire and Rescue and Cumbria Police.”

Police officers and crime scene investigators remained on the scene for several hours after the call.

No update on the investigation had been released by the police at the time of writing.
