Carlisle United's game against Northampton Town this weekend is OFF - and will instead be played next Tuesday.

A frozen pitch has put paid to Saturday's League Two fixture after a 10am inspection by a referee.

And the clubs have moved quickly to rearrange the game for next Tuesday, December 20, at 7.45pm.

Despite the pitch having been covered for several days, this week's plummeting temperatures have left it unplayable.

It is a second consecutive postponement for the Blues after last weekend's home clash with Barrow was frozen off.

But the quick rearrangement means they can quickly look forward to getting back into action, with temperatures expected to rise from this weekend.

It is forecast to be as high as 9 degrees celsius in Northampton on Tuesday, with overnight temperatures also rising back above zero in the two nights before the game.

Any tickets purchased for this weekend's game will be valid for Tuesday's rearrangement, the clubs have confirmed.

Chief executive Nigel Clibbens, speaking on Carlisle's website, said: "We understand the quick turnaround may make it difficult for fans to rearrange their travel plans in order to attend this fixture.

“With an already long period since our last game was played and the significant improvement of the weather forecast for next week, it was felt that a quick rescheduling was the best option.”

Anyone who needs a refund on tickets must return their ticket to Brunton Park before 4pm on Monday, December 19, or contact the ticket office on 0330 094 5930 option 1.

United's away travel supporters group CUSAT have also urged any fans who cannot make the rearranged game on their coaches to contact them as soon as possible on 07563700987.

More postponements are likely in the EFL this weekend, with Tranmere Rovers v Crawley Town in League Two also off because of a frozen pitch.
