Our readers have been sharing their thoughts on the public being invited to have their say on the library in Carlisle being redesigned.

Curl la Tourelle Head Architecture, based in London, has been selected from a shortlist of candidates to take on the project for Cumbria County Council.

The award-winning architecture firm aims to revitalise the library located within the Lanes Shopping Centre - which officially opened in 1984.

Here's what you had to say.

David Eyley said: "Firstly, it is a real shame, and maybe a reflection of the narrow band of businesses we have in Cumbria, that a local firm couldn't be engaged to design this.

"However, it's old and tired and it needs brightening up. Maybe even a small coffee/tea bar, some meeting rooms, better comfortable seating, and something outside or in the Lanes that advertises what's going on in the library day-to-day. People pass those doors every day, but not many enter."

Shirley Wood said: "They need to have the library on ground level for a lot of elderly people."

Funding for the project stems from Carlisle’s Town Deal.

In May 2021, the Town Deal Board agreed a £19.7 million programme based on seven projects.
