RESIDENTS are being asked to share their views on a proposed plan for a new park in the city.
Funding will come as part of the Levelling Up Parks Fund, allowing local authorities the opportunity to claim £85,000 to 'improve green spaces within the area' through tree planting, creation of meadows and improving general public access.
The site selected in the proposed plans is a large field between Petteril Bank Road and Carliol Drive - Petteril Valley Park.
By turning the field into a public open space it is hoped this will strengthen the mile long green space at River Petteril between Carliol Drive and London Road - it also affords links to existing public rights of way linking the centre of Carlisle with villages to the south and east.
Cllr Nigel Christian, portfolio holder for Environment and Transport, said: “The government funding available includes some conditions relating to what use it can be put to, including a significant sum for tree planting, and must be used before summer 2023.
"We are therefore consulting on a proposal to provide a formal footpath link across the site; create areas of frequently cut grass for recreational use; allow areas to grow longer and become hay meadows; and plant trees and shrubs to benefit wildlife and improve the visual appearance of the area.
"Please take up the opportunity to have your say.”
Work on site is set to be completed during early 2023, but before the work begins, the council are looking to find out what residents in the area think of their proposals by taking part in a survey.
The proposed work includes:
- Formalising public access with a new path running through the site.
- Create an area of regularly mown amenity grassland suitable for informal play, exercise and games.
- Retain and enhance areas of meadow grass to support pollinating insects.
- Plant a range of additional trees, shrubs and hedges around the site to provide character and benefit birds and other wildlife.
Have your say before Friday, January 13 online and paper feedback forms are available at Petteril Bank Community Centre and Old Hall Café, Carlisle Archive Centre (Lady Gilford’s House) and Carlisle City Football Club.
