AN AMATEUR theatre group will be bringing in the new year with a brand new play that has never been performed before.
Carlisle's Green Room Club will be bringing The Luvvies to the West Walls Theatre on January 30, which will run to February 4.
‘The Luvvies’, written by Penrith based author David H Ross has never been placed centre stage, so in effect the West Walls Theatre has become home to staging a premiere.
The story of the play is very close to the cast’s heart as it concerns a troupe of amateur, actors putting on a locally written play. In the first half of the play we see our tyro performers rehearsing and learning to act, frequently with a good deal of friction. In the second act we see the play itself, a highly comic spoof on Shakespeare.
The story features an aspiring West End director who has decided to run an amateur dramatics group. A mishmash of wannabe actors answer her advert in the parish newsletter. The scene is set as they embark on a journey, along with a rather grumpy village hall janitor, which finds them performing a parody of The Merchant of Venice penned by an unknown author. As well as laughter, along the way some unpleasant truths emerge.
Director, Stewart Grant, said: "It’s very exciting working with a script that has never been performed before.
"I’m confident we can make the play work but it’s nothing like our usual productions at the Green Room, where we tend to put on plays that have a proven track record. But we’ve got a strong cast and a wonderful set and costumes so we’ll bring the play to life," he said.
Over the coming months, the West Walls Theatre will become home to productions such as a Harry Potter parody, Pottervision as well as Cilla & The Swinging Sixties, a celebration of the legendary Cilla Black.
