Appeal Court to rule on whether trio who helped killers were treated 'too leniently'
APPEAL COURT judges are to rule on whether the sentences for three people who helped the killers of Carlisle man Ryan Kirkpatrick were 'unduly lenient.'
Prosecutors last month asked the Attorney General to review the sentences handed to Ross Neville, Michael Celmins, and Olivia Memmory, who admitted assisting knife thug Kane Hull and his sidekick Liam Porter following the brutal 'execution style' murder of 24-year-old Mr Kirkpatrick.
Neville, 32, from Canonbie, got the lightest sentence, a 12-month community order with 200 hours unpaid work, a 6-month curfew and a fine of £12,000.
At the sentencing hearing before Carlisle Crown Court, the judge was told that Neville’s criminal record comprised of 42 previous offences, including convictions for violent disorder and dishonesty.
Sentence adjourned on 'unwell' Eden man guilty of assault
AN EDEN man has admitted an actual bodily harm assault on a woman – but he was “extremely unwell at the time,” a court heard.
Steven Mounsey, 61, was originally charged with intentionally causing the woman grievous bodily harm, an allegation he denies. During a hearing at Carlisle Crown Court, the prosecution accepted his plead to the lesser charge.
The court heard that it happened on October 27, 2021. The defendant’s mental health state could be clearly ascertained from the police bodyworn camera footage, the court heard.
Judge jails Workington thief Nicky Hewitson for his latest offending
A PROLIFIC criminal from west Cumbria whose record includes 89 previous thefts has been jailed for his latest spate of offending.
Nicky Hewitson, 35, began stealing within days of being released from his most recent prison sentence, beginning when he sneaked into an unlocked parked car and took a woman’s purse containing £300.
At Carlisle’s Rickergate court, the defendant, of Roper Street, Workington, pleaded guilty to seven offences. They were four thefts, covering his theft of the purse and three shoplifting offences.
Man convicted of shoplifting is given five-year Behaviour Order
A Carlisle man sentenced to four weeks in prison for shoplifting has also been made subject of a Community Behaviour Order (CBO) which protects shops from his behaviour for five years.
Carlisle woman, 29, denies running prostitution operation
A CARLISLE woman has appeared before the city’s crown court accused of modern slavery offences and masterminding prostitution.
During a brief hearing before Judge Nicholas Barker, 29-year-old Ana Stefan formally entered not guilty pleas to the three charges she faces. The judge set a provisional date for a trial which is expected to last five days.
Each charge was read aloud by the court clerk as she put the allegations to the defendant, whose address was given as Woodrouffe Terrace, Carlisle.
Man denies assaulting police officer in Whitehaven to resist arrest
Rhys Burr, 23, entered a not guilty plea to the charge when he appeared at Workington Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
The offence is alleged to have taken place in Whitehaven on November 23.
Michael Pope, defending, requested that the case be sent to crown court to be heard with the case of Mark Burr, the defendant’s father.
Burr will appear at Carlisle Crown Court for a pre-trial preparation hearing on February 3.
Man in court accused of making thousands of indecent images of children
A MAN has appeared in court accused of making more than 5,000 indecent images of children and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
Martin Cole, 32, of Greystone Place, Cleator Moor, entered no pleas to the eight charges he faces when he appeared at Workington Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
He is accused of the following offences, alleged to have taken place in 2020:
Making 1,809 category A indecent images of children (the most serious child abuse images)
Making 1,493 category B indecent images of children
Making 2,489 category C indecent images of children
