For this Nostalgia edition we will be taking a look back at one of the most exciting decades of the 20th century, the 1960s.

This was truly one of the most exciting decades in recent memory with so much change and excitement in the air, particularly amongst the youth of the day.

Just like today there was so much going on in the world; the 1960s was the decade when Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon and the now world famous Woodstock music festival took place.

It was also the decade that Dr Martin Luther King gave his famous 'I have a dream' speech which was a major stepping point for the American civil rights movement. And the internationally renowned music magazine The Rolling Stone published their first edition.

There was an awful lot happening back here in Cumbria too. Here at the News & Star we've searched our archives to find some of the most fascinating photos from this time. We hope that you enjoy this trip back in time just as much as we have.

Our first photo shows three nurses at West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, taken in 1960. Whilst our second photo shows a fair in Workington in 1961.

We can also see a darts celebration supper at the Commercial Inn at Dearham in 1962 and a fashion show which took place in Brampton in 1963.

In the fifth picture we can see the Appleby Horse Fair in 1964 and in the sixth picture are competitors in an accordion contest at the City Hall, in Carlisle.

In 1966 we can see a fire engine on Warwick Road in Carlisle and in 1967 there is a photo of people planting flowers at the Town Hall in Carlisle.

The final photos shows a double decker on Hardwicke Circus in 1968 and a Carlisle College student studying autumn leaves on the college grounds in 1969.
