For this Nostalgia edition we will be taking a look back 50 years to the decade of the 70s.

There was an awful lot happening all those years ago and it is a truly fascinating era to look back on.

The 1970s was the decade when the first jumbo jet, the Boeing 747, made its debut flight from New York to London and the movie Jaws opened in cinemas and was considered one of the first Blockbuster films.

It was also the era when the computer game Space Invaders was released and Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak create the Apple Computer Company.

There was also a lot happening back here in Cumbria too. Here at the News & Star we've searched through our archives to find some of the most interesting photos from this time. We hope that you enjoy this trip down memory lane just as much as we have.

Our first photo shows Carlisle United goalkeeper Alan Ross in 1970 and the second picture shows the Harraby Secondary School junior team who took first place in the North West of England gymnastic championships.

In the third photo we can see Carlisle Races in 1972 and in 1973 we can see a view of the Calder Hall Site.

On the fifth photo we can see a group of children from Brampton setting off on a boat race on Talkin Tarn during the open day in 1974. And in the sixth picture is the Kangol's pram in the Wetheral to Warwick Pram Race.

The final photos show judging taking place at the Heskett Newmarket Show, Arthur Dicks, road safety officer, talks to children at school in Lowry Hill, Carlisle and Staff from The Cumberland News' stall at Carlisle Great Fair in 1978.
