A MAJOR new development for Carlisle, with the creation of an estate of more than 700 new homes, has been deferred by Carlisle City council after a development panel meeting held this morning.
Councillors moved to defer their decision on an application for the creation of 722 new homes on land between Wigton Road, Peter Lane and Dalston Road.
Officers had previously recommended to pass the development - subject to a section 106 agreement.
After hearing arguments from both objectors and agents for the development, councillors had a significant debate and questioning for officers.
A number of issues were raised by councillors including provisions for education, access to the site through the Peter Lane entrance and traffic calming measures on Grange Drive.
The chair suggested that the matter should be deferred, due to concerns that members have around traffic issues, with Councillor Mellor seconding the deferral.
The development panel agreed on the decision and the application will now be deferred to a later meeting.
