RESIDENTS and visitors to Carlisle will have one more chance to see fascinating finds and hear about the experiences of volunteers and archaeologists from Carlisle’s Roman bathhouse in the new Sands Centre.
With the support of Carlisle City Council’s Discover Carlisle team, GLL and Tullie House, The Sands Centre is hosting the Uncovering Roman Carlisle project touring exhibition until the beginning of February, to reach new audiences and celebrate the achievements of Uncovering Roman Carlisle.
In 2021 and 2022 Carlisle volunteers and archaeologists from Wardell Armstrong excavated Carlisle Cricket Club to explore what we know now to be the largest Roman bathhouse on Hadrian’s Wall.
Over 1100 days given by volunteers, the excavations have discovered more than 700 finds, including 500 coins, and over 30 Intaglios - the carved gemstones from Roman signet rings.
This project is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and is supported by volunteers led by a partnership of Carlisle City Council, Carlisle Cricket Club, Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery and Wardell Armstrong.
