AS layers of frost and black ice formed across Carlisle this week, many readers vented a similar frustration to one resident who spoke out about the lack roads being gritted within the city.

With weather warnings placed across Cumbria as temperatures fell below zero degrees on January 16 and 17; Ashley, a Carlisle resident, witnessed a few precarious situations on his way to work as cars struggled to gain control as they skidded on black ice due to a lack of treatment.

He indicated Upperby Road, Currock Road and Pennine Way were particularly dangerous under the weather conditions.

"We pay good money for our taxes, much like the rest of the city, and these areas have been completely ignored.

"What happens if an ambulance has to get somewhere in a hurry? It's very dangerous and it was the exact same just before Christmas - something needs to be done now," he said.

Stagecoach also had to cancel some of their services within the city due to a lack of roads being treated - causing late runnings and complete cancellations.

On social media, Andrea Thomson said: "We need grit boxes on our estate - it’s lethal."

Maureen Scott was of a similar mind: "Totally agree, all the main roads and housing estates should be gritted. God knows, we pay enough council tax for this service."

Robert Noble also pointed out: "Grit boxes on the street are empty, so can't even do it yourself. Guy on Beverly Rise had wheelbarrow full grit doing roads on his own because it has not been done - shocking,."

Hannah Duncan said it has even made doing her job more difficult: "Tell me about it’s been a nightmare! Being a support worker in the community, I’ve found it hard. On the way home, sliding on the ice, getting closer to a bus, I couldn’t stop. An accident waiting to happen," she said.
