OUR readers have chosen the best things that they remember about school dinners.

Whilst some of us may have fond memories of school dinners, there may be some that we hated.

Whether it was casserole for lunch or Arctic role for dessert we've all experienced the typical dinners that schools served in the UK.

Here at the News & Star we've compiled together a list of all the best things you, our readers, remember about them.

1.) Cheese pie

One of the biggest contenders for the best school dinner was a cheese pie, or as others call it a cheese flan.

Nyree Murdoch said: "They did in Southfield school, the best cheese pie an chips or home made t-cakes with a pattie in, delicious, loved school dinners."

Marilyn Kerr said: "Definitely the cheese pie. I have tried to replicate it but mine doesn’t taste the same."

Tanya Tolmie Mcmean said: "Cheese pie on a Friday  Manchester tart. We had a great group of cooks at St.Joseph's Workington in the 60's"

Steve Bird, Isobel Hamer and Steven Coates both mentioned cheese pie.

2.) Sponge cake

Sponge cake was staple of the school lunch, a dessert many of us looked forward to.

Iris Foster said: "School dinners were really good, we had a fabulous cook. Ginger sponge with toffee sauce, fruit tart, trifle, were wonderful!"

Mike Howard said: "Sponge pudding and custard, sometimes it was green and I loved it. Still taste it now just thinking about it."

Edward John Matheson said: "Custard was the best especially the syrup and jam sponge."

3.) Manchester tart

The shortcrust pastry shell is spread with raspberry jam, covered with a custard filling and topped with coconut and cherries.

Katrina Gibson said: "Manchester tart, roast potatoes."

Steve Bird said: "My wife's favourite was manchester tart and mock cream."

Fiona Smethurst said: "Manchester Tart and American Bean Pie."

4.) Potatoes

We had many mentions for the potatoes that were served at school, there were tatties of all forms mentioned.

Raymond Cunningham said: "Mince, mashed potato, grated carrots and Manchester tart, all freshly made."

Dave Emmerson said: "Mashed potato, loved it."

Jill Egan said: "Pea soup, homemade bread, followed by roast gammon, pease pudding, beetroot and mashed potato. We were lucky, it was a small infant school with 1 cook, her food was just like homemade dinners."

5.) Fish and Chips

A staple of a Friday in school, fish and chips had many mentions amongst our readers.

Ethel Haggerty said: "Fish chips and peas on Fridays."

Pauline Roberts said: "Fish and chips, and rice pudding. I still take my grandson to the same school."
