CALLS for improved signage on key routes to a border town have been highlighted at Westminster.

Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell raised the issue of signage to Langholm from Carlisle directly with the UK minister for roads and local transport Richard Holden.

The meeting adds momentum to a campaign aimed at increasing the profile of the Muckle Toon launched last year by the Langholm Alliance’s Eskdale tourism officer Sharon Tolson.

Mr Mundell explained to the Minister that while the beautiful rolling border hills, remoteness and the town’s traditions were part of its charm, the community was proving unnecessarily difficult to find for some travellers because of the absence of adequate sign-posting.

He said: “I was grateful to the minister for the opportunity to brief him first-hand on the negative impact lack of suitable road signage at key locations was having on the increasingly important tourism sector in the Esk Valley.

“He took on board all the points I made, and I understand he will look at what options are available to improve the situation.

“There is [sic] strict criteria laid down for the provision of place signs on trunk roads by the relevant authorities.

“A priority for the Alliance would be to have Langholm mentioned on a sign for the A7 route to Edinburgh from the roundabout beside the M6 at Junction 44 north of Carlisle.

“They are also seeking better signage for Langholm on routes from the M74 north of the border and the A75, which would be a matter for Transport Scotland.”

Mr Holden said he plans to explore available options and update Mr Mundell at a later date.

Sharon Tolson said: “With the continuing increase in staycation holidays and post-Covid overseas visitors returning, we want to make sure the Muckle Toon is given the awareness it deserves and increase in visitor numbers for our area, the feedback from the many accommodation providers about lack of signage for Langholm has been raised by visitors as an issue when arriving from The M6/M74/A75.

“The main focus is the A7 Carlisle to the Border and the A6071 from Gretna to Longtown at the junction onto the A7 where there are opportunities for Langholm signposted on various existing signs.

“It's all about creating awareness of the first town over the Border along these main trunk roads".
