WHITEHAVEN born rugby league legend Kyle Amor has announced a major event to finish off his testimonial year- which will see Cumbrian rugby league return to he county later this year.
At a fans forum organised as part of his testimonial year yesterday evening, January 28 held at Whitehaven Golf Glub, the St Helens RLFC star announced his testimonial year will culminate with an international match of Cumbria vs. Wales at the LEL arena, Whitehaven on October, 21 2023.
Kyle said: “I think it’s massive and all the picture that we saw last year in Workington there was nearly 4,000 people there and that was organised in three weeks at Workington for the Cumbria game, I really thought long about it- I just thought how good would it be for myself to come back to my hometown of Whitehaven and play for Cumbria in what will be my last ever game.
“I am retiring at the end of this season- this year will be my last in my hometown where it all started off, there is a little bit of ego there you know around myself and how I hope to finish, but for me I just feel that with IMG coming into the game and structural changes to the game I just feel this is a massive occasion to showcase once again that Cumbrian rugby league shouldn’t be ignored."
Kyle believes that the testimonial game, which will be played in October this year could be a chance to 'change the future of the game' in the county.
He said: “Hopefully if we get a massive turnout to get behind rugby league and celebrate my career as well- you know this is a testimonial, but the bigger picture for me is to make sure that Cumbrian rugby league is in a better place.
“I think we are all as players, as stakeholders in the game we have to be able to leave it in a better place than how we found it before if we can.
“In any time you play for any club and wear that shirt, you are only borrowing it, you don’t own it and you don’t own rugby league- no body ever can, we just need to make sure that we put something in place that can hopefully change the future of the game.”
The game is set to take place at 3pm on October, 21 2023 - with tickets announced later this year.
