1) Amato's, Abbey Street

The popular restaurant, which offers traditional Italian and Sicilian fare, has a 4.5/5 rating on Tripadvisor.

Amato's has received 420 excellent reviews, with customers praising the restaurant for both their food and service.

One recent reviewer wrote: "Our experience was superb from start to finish."

"Food was great, atmosphere lovely - pleasantly surprised at the prices - overall just excellent."

2) Casa Romana, Warwick Road

This Italian restaurant, which opened in 1993, also has a 4.5/5 rating.

481 out of 735 reviewers gave the location five stars out of five.

"Have visited Casa Romana several times and one can expect the same exceptional food and service every time," said one.

3) SannaS, Lowther Street

This Italian-Sardinian restaurant situated in the heart of Carlisle has also received excellent reviews on Tripadvisor.

It has a 4.5/5 rating, with more than 750 excellent reviews.

One reviewer said: "This is a fantastic Italian restaurant in the city centre.

"Great staff, excellent service snd a range of freshly prepared and tasty food."

4) Gianni's Ristorante, Cecil Street

The establishment, which set foot in Carlisle in 1986, also has a 4.5 rating on Tripadvisor.

260 out of 391 reviewers have rated the restaurant as excellent.

"Great visit, we thoroughly enjoyed the food and the service was excellent throughout and the staff were so friendly," said a recent reviewer. "We had a great experience."

5) La Mezzulana, The Crescent

Another fan favourite in Carlisle, La Mezzulana has more than 280 five-out-of-five reviews.

The restaurant has received comments praising its reasonable prices and range of options, with one reviewer saying it was the "best gluten free meal" she had ever had.

Another reviewer said: "Great Italian food in a wonderful atmosphere.

"Always good here, portions big and always friendly service."

6) Franco's, Green Market

The restaurant has a 4 rating on Tripadvisor, with 340 excellent reviews and 160 very good reviews out of 686.

"I have nothing but positives to say in relation to this lovely restaurant," said one comment. "Food consistently excellent and to the highest standards.

"Staff are amazing and the host Carole is so friendly and welcoming. I would thoroughly recommend a visit to this establishment."

7) Alex's Pasta Bar, Green Street

"A+" is how one reviewer has described the restaurant.

24 out of 26 reviews for the restaurant are excellent, and it has a Tripadvisor rating of 5.

One reviewer said: "Have eaten here several times now and it's perfect everytime.

"I can't recommend this place enough to people."
