A Cumbrian amateur boxing club saw further success at a sell-out event late last month.

Carlisle Villa Amateur Boxing Club picked up 10 out of 12 wins during their home show at The Halston on January 28.

The evening started with three non-scoring skills bouts featuring Bella Hodgson and brothers Ollie and Adrien Jemilijanovas.

10-year-old Danny Salisbury got Villa off to a good start with a great win against Isaac Adams-Buckworth of Middlesbrough ABC.

James Maughan was up next against late stand-in Leon Emmerson of Workington ABC.

James started strongly against the taller opponent landing some big shots to the body and did enough to get the nod from all three judges.

Jayden Carruthers found it tough to land anything solid against the tricky Croswell Barton of Darlington ABC going down to a point’s loss in a scrappy contest.

Johnpaul Miller started well catching his opponent Cayden Shepherd of Workington ABC with some sharp accurate punches that had the West Cumbrian covering up on the ropes for most of the round.

A well-timed left-right combination caught the youngster flush and was issued a standing eight count.

During the interval, the corner decided to withdraw their boxer from the bout.

England representative Marc Haughan was involved in a cracking contest against Manchester’s Kieran McDaid of Jimmy Egans Boxing Academy in a bout of three-by-three-minute rounds.

The experienced McDaid started on the front foot catching Marc with a flurry of punches which Marc had trouble countering as the movement from the Manc was very good.

The first round lost, Marc put McDaid on the back foot for the first time.

Marc was letting his shots go now and was having the better of the exchanges, but McDaid landed a solid backhand on the bell.

Marc scored with a long left at the start of the final round, switching to the head and body, and took the decision unanimously on the judge’s scorecards.

After a short interval, the boxing recommenced with four senior contests.

First up was debutant Isaac Hill, matched against Merzai Wahid, representing Manchester’s Samsons Gym.

At the end of the first round Wahid continued punching after the bell and gave the referee no choice but to disqualify him.

Taylor King boxed behind a long jab for all rounds and won over Kendal’s Joey Carter by unanimous decision.

The penultimate bout of the evening was a super heavyweight clash, James Miller representing the Villa versus Donny Alexio of Cleator Moor, with Miller winning by unanimous decision.

Concluding, Chara Rueangprat and Eddie Graham of Wigton ABC boxed a tight two-by-two-minute contest, with Chara just edging out.
