LAKES College supports more than 1,000 Cumbrian apprentices to kickstart careers every year – and is highlighting their success as part of a national celebration this week.
The college, which works with 700 local and national employers to deliver the next generation of workers, is taking part in National Apprenticeship Week to promote the value of apprenticeships and share their stories.
This week students have been taking part in skills challenges including a cooking competition to showcase their talent, with employers invited into the college to judge the best results.
Chris Nattress, principal at Lakes College, said: “National Apprenticeship Week is a fantastic opportunity for us to celebrate the wide range of apprenticeships we offer, working directly with more than 700 local and national employers to educate and train their workforce and talent.
“Our apprentices are a huge part of our student body and we are always proud to see the success they enjoy in their careers across a variety of industries, ranging from nuclear and engineering through to construction and catering.
“An apprenticeship is an excellent way to kickstart your career by learning on the job with a salary and excellent support with training.
“We regularly launch new courses to offer this exciting option to more learners for their chosen industry.”
Lakes College’s multi-million-pound campus at Lillyhall includes first-class facilities designed to give learners experience of a real-life work environment. For apprentices, it is a place to hone their craft and build the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours needed to thrive in their role.
Simon Cornthwaite, who is one of the college’s carpentry and joinery apprentices, said: “I’m enjoying the practical side of my apprenticeship the most; it’s hands-on and I tend to learn more that way.
“One day I hope to own a successful joinery business, it’s a great way to earn a living and I have all the support here at college to push me towards that path.
“I prefer to be treated like an adult which is why I enjoy college – and an apprenticeship is a great way to make money.”
An apprenticeship is a real job where you get paid while receiving hands-on training in the workplace.
Lakes College offers apprenticeships up to degree level in a huge range of sectors, including business, care, nuclear, engineering, hospitality, digital, education and construction.
The college has launched its Apprenticeship Academy to help candidates to put themselves in the best position possible to secure the right opportunity for them.
