Rail passengers experienced disruption after a person died on the tracks.
The incident happened between Newcastle and Carlisle, and all lines are currently closed.
A spokesperson from the British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to the line near Hexham at 3:28pm today (February 9) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
"Paramedics also attended, and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
The disruption means all Newcastle to Carlisle services were unable to run between Hexham and Carlisle in both directions and were be cancelled.
Newcastle to Hexham services were running as usual.
Rail replacement transport, provided by Workington Travel, ran from Carlisle at 5:25pm to Hexham.
National Rail said journey times will be extended by up to 90 minutes while travelling via rail replacement transport.
They added that rail replacement transport is proving difficult to source and therefore passengers are advised to use local buses while replacement transport is unavailable and use delay repay.
Disruption was expected until 6pm, yet one passenger said they were waiting for a rail replacement bus to Haltwhistle 20 minutes later.
National Rail have confirmed the lines have now reopened.
