POLICE are operating with an 'increased presence' in Carlisle city centre following the launch of two rape investigations reported over the weekend.
Police received reports of both an alleged rape which occurred in the area of Carlisle Railway Station on February 11 and also a report of rape in the late hours of the same day on Mary Street, Carlisle.
Whilst the incidents are reported to have occurred very close to each other, it is not believed the two are connected.
Following the incident near Carlisle Railway Station, a 16-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of rape.
There is an increased police presence in the area to provide reassurance and for people to come forward with information or concerns as the investigation continues.

He has since been released under investigation as police continue with their enquiries, while the alleged victim is currently being supported by specialist officers.
A spokesperson from Cumbria Police confirmed that no other party is being sought in connection with this incident.
Enquiries remain ongoing however, and anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area is asked to contact police.
Police also received a report on February 12 at 12.10am of a suspected rape in Mary Street at some point between 10pm and 11pm.
Detective Inspector Duncan Brooker said: "We understand this may cause concern within the community and public safety is absolutely paramount.
"We do have an increased police presence in the area to provide reassurance and for people to come forward with information or concerns as the investigation continues.
"The victim is being fully supported and extensive enquiries are underway.
"If you have any information which could assist our investigation, please make contact," he said.
A spokesperson from Cumbria Constabulary said: "Detectives are continuing with their enquiries regarding this incident, including working with the woman who came forward to report.
"Such investigations are taken extremely seriously and officers are working diligently and making extensive enquiries as part of their investigation.
"Detectives reiterate their appeal for anyone with information about this incident who has yet to come forward to do so.
