A MOTHER with a long history of mental health issues tragically took her own life just months after getting married, an inquest heard.
Ellen Boyes, 46, died at her home on Wellington Street in Millom on September 10 last year.
An inquest into her death held at Cockermouth Coroners’ Court heard that Mrs Boyes had married her husband Mark in June 2022.
They would spend every weekend exploring the Lakes and Mrs Boyes had stopped taking her anti-depressants.
Mr Boyes said his wife was “sociable”, “friendly” and “loved people”.
He said the week leading up to her death had been “normal”. She was looking forward to her daughter, Maisie visiting.
On September 10, Mr Boyes said he had arrived home “a bit late” and Mrs Boyes had started drinking wine.
He said he’d had a shower and she was still drinking. He told her that he was going out and she needed to “go to bed and sleep it off”.
Mr Boyes said that this was the last time he saw her alive. He arrived home around 8pm and dialled 999.
A statement read to the inquest from one of the police officers who attended the scene, said upon entering the property, a female was lying on the floor and there was a suicide note on the kitchen work top.
Coroner Robert Cohen said the suicide note addressed to Mr Boyes indicated that Mrs Boyes intended to take her own life.
The inquest heard that Mrs Boyes had difficulties with mental health and alcohol. She had made previous attempts to self-harm and take her own life.
A toxicology report showed she had consumed a significant amount of alcohol that would impair decision-making and cognitive function.
Mr Cohen gave the medical cause of death as hanging and concluded that Mrs Boyes died by suicide.
He said: “The court can only express our profound sorrow to Mr Boyes. Having married in June, this tragic event happened only a few months later. You have our profound sympathy.”
