A MOTORIST who was driving without insurance or a valid licence said she “didn’t know how the law works” in this country.
Police stopped a Ford Fiesta being driven on the A595 at Distington on January 30, due to the rear registration plate lights not being illuminated, Workington Magistrates’ Court heard.
Pamela Fee, prosecuting, said the driver, Fiina Naafa Kapolo, 35, did not hold a UK driving licence and her licence had expired in 2022.
Kapolo, who was not legally represented in court, said: “I didn’t know about insurance – how it works. I didn’t know it works in this country. I think it was my responsibility to find out how the law works here.”
The defendant, of Harcourt Street, Workington, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence and using a motor vehicle on a road or public place without third party insurance.
Kapolo was fined £120 and must pay £85 costs and a £48 surcharge. Six penalty points were added to her licence.
