A COMMUNITY has been left in shock after the 'desperately sad news' a man had died following a fire in Carlisle this week.

The man died following a fire at a house on Buchanan Road on Thursday, February 16. Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service crews were first mobilised at 3.05pm that afternoon to reports of the blaze.

Three fire engines attended, as did Cumbria Police vehicles.

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said the next day: "Sadly, we can confirm the death of a man at the property.

"Alongside Cumbria Police, a full fire investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the incident.

"This is an extremely tragic incident and our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends during this difficult time."

Ward councillor Chris Wills described the sad news as a 'shock to everybody' in the area, and offered support to those affected by the tragic incident.

He said: "I don't really know any circumstances about this but obviously it is a desperately sad happening.

"I'm regularly down Buchanan Road and there are some very friendly people down there, there is something of a community spirit so I am sure it will be a shock to everybody in the locality.

"My thoughts go out to the man's family and friends and if anybody wishes to talk in confidence then I am always available, if anybody would like to make contact."

Carlisle firefighters paid tribute to the man, who has not yet been named by police.

In a statement on social media, a spokesperson from Carlisle East Fire Station said: "Our thoughts are with the gentleman’s friends and family."

After the death was announced yesterday morning, February 17, many tributes have poured in on social media - with messages of condolence being given to his family.

One reader said: "Heartbreaking, thoughts go out to his family at this sad time." This sentiment was echoed by countless others.

Fire crews will now carry out a full investigation to determine the cause of the tragic incident, working with the police.
