A grant of £150,00 has been received by a local council to extend a Cumbrian nature reserve.

Carlisle City Council received the funding from Cumbria Coastal Community Forest to extend Kingmoor South Nature Reserve into the three central agricultural fields at the centre.

A spokesperson from Carlisle City Council said: “The project will see the planting of 10,000 native broad-leaf trees across the area, leaving areas of grassland that will be managed in partnership with Cumbria Wildlife Trust to create species-rich grassland.

“Seasonal ponds will also be created in the wetter areas of the site, further improving habitats for wildlife.

“New stone footpaths will also be created that will become a dedicated right of way linking into the existing public footpath network.

“Over time the agricultural fencing will be removed, where it is safe to do so, allowing open public access across the area.”

The project with start in March 2023, with the bulk of the tree planting taking place this month, they said.

Over the spring and summer stone footpaths, seating, picnic tables, and interpretation will be installed.
