A CAMPAIGNER and incumbent councillor for the new Cumberland Authority has called for better road safety measures in his area.

Brian Wernham, who will represent Stanwix on the new authority which takes power on April 1, 2023, said his area is a hot spot for car crashes and accidents.

One such crash happened this week between two drivers on Stanwix Bank/Scotland Road, which Mr Wernham said highlights how dangerous the right-hand turns are there.

A police spokesperson said this crash, which was reported to have happened at 11.55am on February 20, happened between a Skoda and a Hyundai.

There were no injuries, and the vehicles were recovered by roughly 1pm.

Mr Wernham added: “I have already submitted a written question to the local area committee about these junctions, and I will be making a speech at the local area committee (for Carlisle) on this on March 3.

"We have seen two fatalities in the Stanwix conservation area in the last year and the crashes continue.

“Just a few weeks previously we have seen a car written off trying to do a right-hand turn out of Cavendish Terrace onto the Eden Bridge.

“I made speeches at the local area committee in May and July and residents have raised petitions.

“I have called for a 20mph speed limit in Stanwix conservation zone and for road traffic safety assessments to be carried out, and yet nothing has been done."

A spokesperson from Cumbria County Council, currently responsible for roads like those in Stanwix, said: “Cumbria County Council is committed to improving road safety for all communities which we do in liaison with Cumbria Road Safety Partnership.

“Any proposals for introducing 20mph zones in Stanwix and other areas will now be a decision for the new Cumberland Council, which takes effect from April 1, 2023”.
