A PROTEST was held by anti-refugee demonstrators in Carlisle this afternoon. The group gathered in the city centre and marched up London Road. A focus of their anger is the Government's policy of housing asylum seekers in private hotels across the country.
A counter-demonstration was held in the city centre by a number of groups including Anti-Racist Cumbria who sought to show solidarity with refugees and asylum seekers and welcome them to this country.
A significant police presence was in place to 'facilitate' the protest, which culminated in a brief stand off on London Road before dispersing in the early afternoon.
