FOR this week's edition of nostalgia, we have looked back at the start of spring across the county throughout the years
The flowers are in bloom and bluebells scatter the ground of the Lake District. The new leaves turn a brighter shade and the sheep have been brought down from the fells to lamb and graze in the warmer, low-lying pastures.
It’s spring in the Lake District, Cumbria, and that means daffodils.
Throughout the county, spring sees the start of outdoor festivals and fairs. From music to food and art to theatre, the calendar of events gets busier and fuller. The stately homes and grand estates are hosting activities to mark the new season and the celebration of Easter. There are egg hunts to be enjoyed, including those with the world’s most famous bunny, Peter Rabbit, born in the imagination of one of the Lake District’s best-known authors, Beatrix Potter.
However, today we focus on the past as we look back at older memories. Some animal pictures in the collection shows a cow feeding lambs in what was unusual goings on down on the farm at Askham in 1977. Another shows a lamb and some daffodils in a Cumbrian field in 1974. There are lamb triplets on a farm at Wreay in 1974.
It is flowers galore in others as one photo shows daffodil day at Warwick Hall in 1972, another shows lady Graham handing out daffodils at Netherby in 1968.
Two photos show perhaps, overly eager people testing out the water in spring. One photo shows Cumbrians testing the water at Silloth in 1969, whilst another shows brave young lads who got right in the water in the 1978 spring sunshine on the River Eden in Bitts Park, Carlisle.
