A grandson is challenging himself to take part in his first-ever marathon in memory of his grandad.

Jack Patrick, 19, is to take on the Carlisle half marathon on Sunday March 12 to raise money for Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland after taking care of his grandad  before he passed away.

The Carlisle resident has never done a marathon before but has been inspired to do the challenge in memory of his grandad.

"The way Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland treated and helped my grandad was second to none," Jack said.

"They really helped my nana out especially with staying over through the nights and giving her some rest.

"The people that work for them and the whole of the care service deserve so much as they really did make a difference.

"I choose them to run for as I wanted to give something back with the wonderful job they did caring for him."

"I have never done a half marathon before but the idea came to me to try something new and do it for an amazing cause."

Jack has set up a fundraiser for those to help raise money for the hospice and has been surprised with how much he has raised in only a few days.

He adds: "When I first set it up two days ago, there was no target amount that we wanted to raise.

"Anything would be great, but I am really happy how much we have raised as within two days we have hit £500.

"With what we have raised so far - I hope to keep it will keep growing before the event starts.

"I just want to say thank you to everyone who has donated to the charity and supported me on social media.

"Another thing I would like to say is a big thank you to Hospice at Home for everything they did for him in making him comfortable and allowing him to stay at home with his dog poppy and my amazing nana."
