A collection of unique vintage horse-drawn carts will go on auction later this month.

The first garden sale of the year at H&H Auction Rooms on Saturday, March 18, is already attracting interest, drawn to a cornucopia of gardenalia and a collection of over 10 horse-drawn carts and other conveyances from a bygone era

Traders and keen gardeners will find a range of feature pieces at the Borderway Exhibition Hall in Carlisle including chimney pots, sandstone troughs, stoneware, and statuettes.

There is also a salt glaze strawberry planter made in the form of a tree trunk at the famous Errington Reay pottery at Bardon Mill, Northumberland, in the late 19th century.

H&H said it’s holding the sale on a Saturday to enable buyers to attend who could not be present on a weekday and to attract potential buyers focused on the sale of horse-drawn vehicles.

Many lots have been submitted for the sale from the famous collection acquired over many years by Mr and Mrs Allan of Silloth, with more from small museums and private vendors making this possibly the biggest single sale of historic carts and farm vehicles H&H has ever offered.

All the vehicles listed for sale have been lovingly and immaculately restored and include a farm hay cart, a Governess pony trap, a Kent apple cart with no history of being upset, a rubber-wheeled wagonette made by a Royal Warranted company in Kinross, and a dog trap restored by a Scottish company with royal connections.

H&H auctioneer Stephen Farthing said: “We are very grateful to Mr and Mrs Allan for allowing us to offer their wonderful collection for sale.

“They have built up a remarkable, museum standard fleet of vehicles that give us a unique insight into old-fashioned horse-powered transport, and now they feel it is time to quite literally pass the reins.

“By moving the sale to a Saturday, I hope we can persuade buyers to make this a family day out.

“The carts and traps are fascinating, and the garden artefacts range very widely in size and guide price which gives everybody a chance to release their inner garden designer and bid for something large or small.”
